Audi wanted to create a new Q3 that was completely different from the previous generation. The first generation was inspired by the 2006 concept, so it’s time for a new one. The small crossover looks more aggressive from every angle, making the BMW X1 a worthy contender.
The new Q3 actually shares some of the Q8’s design cues, especially when it comes to its profile. We also see a grid with vertical lines, like in the Q8 or A4/A6 Allroad. All other Audi models are equipped with horizontal.
Other features include a sportier front bumper, larger taillights and headlamps reminiscent of those of the A3 Sportback.
Audi has increased its new model by 9.65 cm in length and 7.6 cm in wheelbase. This means more space for passengers in the rear seats, while leaving 674 liters of space in the trunk. It can also turn into 1526 liters if the seats are folded down. By comparison, the 2018 BMW X1 has 505 liters of space and 1,550 liters with the seats down.
Inside, Q3 buyers will enjoy Audi’s 12.3-inch virtual cockpit cluster as well as an 8.8-inch infotainment display. A larger 10-inch display is also possible.
Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are two USB ports on the front. There are also two additional USB ports and a 12V outlet for rear seat passengers, as well as an available Wi-Fi hotspot. The new technology is «swarm intelligence,» a feature that helps cars tell each other about road hazards and weather conditions. The system will be available in Europe and probably in the US.
In terms of safety, the new 2019 Audi Q3 comes equipped with emergency braking, lane departure warning, reversing warning and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.
In Europe, the models will be available with four engines: three petrol and one diesel. Petrol models will feature a 1.5-liter TFSI engine with 148 hp. and a torque of 250 Nm. The base Q3 will be designated 35 TFSI and will include a cylinder deactivation system, as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission and standard front-wheel drive. It will be followed by a 6-speed manual transmission.
We also got to the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder TFSI engine, which is available in two versions: the first is the TFSI 40 offering 187 hp. and 320 Nm of torque, while the TFSI 45 model gets 226 hp. and 350 Nm. Both models will be available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and Quattro all-wheel drive.
The diesel will be available with a 2.0-liter TDI engine with 148 hp. 340 Nm of torque. Designated Q3 35 TDI, it will initially be available with a manual transmission and all-wheel drive. It will be followed by a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Audi also plans to offer a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre TDI with 187 hp. soon.
The new model also gets automatic damper control and a «dynamic control system» with the following six driving modes: Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Offroad, Efficiency and Individual.
It is expected that in Europe sales of the model will begin in November this year.
